Project Phases

Understanding Dimension of the Problem in California

Using volunteers, this phase focused on developing tools that could be used to estimate the number of older concrete buildings in California cities. The work was supported by a Hazard Mitigation Grant from FEMA to California Office of Emergency Services. Report available HERE.

Understanding Building Characteristics

This phase, supported by a grant from the US Geological Survey, developed an online database documenting the seismic performance of concrete buildings.  Database can be viewed by clicking HERE.

Understanding Policy Implications

This phase, supported by CalEMA, through FEMA, is focusing on working with several pilot cities to help them develop a possible screening tool to identify dangerous buildings and begin to identify policy recommendations. A toolkit is being developed to make all the tools and strategies developed as part of the project available at one location on the web.
